Prospectus for the Establishment of the Hotta Scholarship Foundation

June 2, 2006

After the collapse of the bubble economy, the Japanese economy experienced a prolonged recession. However, thanks to the diligent efforts of both the public and private sectors, corporate capital investment has shown a sustained expansion trend, indicating that we are emerging from this "plateau" phase, and a sense of optimism is spreading. Although the 21st century began amidst a prolonged recession, Japan's role and responsibilities have become increasingly important in a world where information technology (IT) and borderless societies are advancing globally.

In such social circumstances, the cultivation of human resources with a long-term perspective is essential, and it is more important than ever to develop as many talented individuals as possible. At the same time, it is also a fact that many ambitious students, despite their academic excellence, sound mind and body, and strong research curiosity, are seeking opportunities for scholarship assistance due to financial difficulties in covering their academic expenses. Furthermore, many international students studying in Japan are likely facing considerable financial hardship due to Japan's price levels and housing situation.

Kazuhito Hotta, the founder of this foundation, established Sanki Shoji Co., Ltd. in February 1956. He was quick to recognize influential European brands in the post-war period, introducing high-end fabrics, luxury ready-to-wear clothing, bags, watches, and other items to the Japanese market.

It is believed that providing scholarships as a public service to Japanese students studying in Europe who research European art and culture, with which Mr. Hotta had a deep lifelong connection, and aim to elevate the standard of Japanese art and culture, as well as to international students from Europe studying in Japan who aspire to contribute to the development of European culture and industry, is a deeply meaningful endeavor.

We believe that undertaking scholarship activities to nurture talented individuals contributes to the public good and fosters international friendship and goodwill, which is why we are establishing this foundation.
